Former Shanghai Diesel Engine Factory, founded in April 1947, formerly known as Wusong Manufacturing Plant of China Agricultural Machinery Company, has trial-produced a 5-horsepower gasoline engine. After the founding of New China, it was renamed Wusong Machinery Factory, which produced 750 rpm/d12 horsepower single cylinder horizontal diesel engines in batches. In August 1953, it was officially designated as the Shanghai diesel engine plant, and began to design and manufacture diesel engines on its own. In 1958, the first self-designed, fully domestic 6135 diesel engine was born here, which pioneered the manufacture of medium-power high-speed diesel engines in China. In 1964, the 6135 diesel engine was made up of the first T120 bulldozer made in China and identified by the whole machine. In 1969, it successfully matched the first domestic ZL40 loader, and established Shangchai as the most important power supplier in the domestic construction machinery industry. In 1993, it was converted into a joint-stock listed company. When it was restructured, its registered capital was 480 million yuan and its total assets amounted to 2 billion 300 million yuan. At present, Shangchai has become a national super-large high-tech enterprise which integrates development, design, manufacture and marketing. Its business scope covers diesel engine, fuel system, diesel generator set and investment enterprises.
